excepting soccer, tennis, athletics, swimming, and field hockey, no other sports enjoys global popularity ...
India is pretty bad in terms of world ranking in all of these and have not won any international tournament worth mentioning in last two-three decades (Paes-Bhupati, PT Usha being rare exceptions) ...
world-wide, chess gets poor publicity because it's more of a mind-game than sports ...
badminton is popular only in parts of Europe (mainly Scandinavia) and in Far East (Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Korea, etc.) and only Gopichand has made any mark here in post-Padukone era ...
only in cricket, India has produced some world-class players (e.g., Azhar, Tendulkar, Kumble, Dravid, Ganguly, etc.) in post-WC-1983 era - so all the media & public attention goes there ...

Yes you are right as said "Cricket is played in very few countries", but in India number of followers of cricket are more than any other sport. This may be the first reason why media is giving more concentration and converage on this game. Second every business looks gain. Cricket is the only sport where all people spend their time and money because of its popularity and thrilling wins of matchs !!!!
Partially I am disagree with your question, media are trying to promote other games as well, DD live telecasted Chess tournaments, hockey touranments, football matchs, tennis and many other sports also.
Every enterpenure looks healthy business, no one wants to do for charity.Cricketers made cricket high profile sport in all aspects.

G'day Shrikant B,
Thank you for your question.
Certainly, the Indian media gives a lot of publicity to cricket. Presumably, they do it because there is a great deal of increase in cricket in India. Sometimes, cricket issues are given much more publicity than they deserve as with the so-called pushing at the Champions Cup.
The media certainly should highlight other sporting achievements such as the ones that you mentioned.
Regards

The answer lies in your question itself. You call her the "badminton girl". I thought she had a name. And possibly you don't recall it. When you simply don't know her name, why blame others for neglecting cricket.
It isn't just the media at fault, each one of us is wrong. Because we don't even read newspaper reports on other sport, so why would the media highlight them? They have got to sell newspapers - or get viewership as well.
The day you go out to buy tickets to watch a hockey match or a badminton tournament - or even watch it on TV, things would change.

Media, a commercial activity, follows the law of demand and supply. The money laden BCCI naturally attracts the bees of media and you can not escape the focus on cricket for some time to come.

i might desire to declare, i admire your optimism! this section looks to get further and further infantile (in basic terms some individuals even with the undeniable fact that!!) as time is going on. The racist feedback from all events might desire to furnish up! there is not something incorrect with remarkable natured ribbing (desire that is a term that is understood with the help of the Indian supporters) yet all the interior maximum stuff and the rehashing of previous incidents is merely undeniable stupid! truthfully those human beings have greater effective issues to do with their time? besides, like I reported,. i appreciate your optimism and that i assume if one or 2 human beings provide up the infantile rubbish, something might have been finished! (And for people who like a genuine good infantile web site, pop throughout the time of to the religion & Spirituality web site and "watch" the christians vs Atheists have a circulate!!! Now that is entertainment....) EDIT Ravi, jointly as i will admire your opinion, calling yet another group cheats is tremendously low! and that's why Aussie supporters get upset. Noone desires to be referred to as a cheat.
