I'm from Minnesota. NO one I know even locks their doors much. My father is the worst. He absolutely refuses to ever lock his doors. When he went to Switzerland for a month, the doors were left unlocked the whole time. I guess that shows you either how nice and friendly them Minnesotans are, or how silly and stupid.
I've heard the same applies to Canada, and in Bowling for Columbine there was a woman who said the same.
My friends here in SF leave keys in the mailslot if need be.

Most everyone has a spare key to their homes and cars.
Like a responsible person -- my spare keys are safe (in a safe) at a location different from my home. This is because I am a Long-Term Single Parent (FINALLY Empty Nester) that survived a short disaster of a marriage to an abusive, violent, mentally ill ex.
This is for MY OWN SAFETY. MY family knows where I am at and they have the access so that if anything happens to me they can start the process to get the ex prosecuted.
(And yes, My ex did recently Burglarize my Residence -- and this is more than 13 years after the divorce)

No i don't hide a spare, i don't even have one. I live in an apartment and they have the master, if i would ever need it. By the way, where do you hide yours??
