I've never been in sales but from a buyers stand point. I like it when someone says "welcome" or "good afternoon", etc and then gives me their name and offers assistance if I need it. I will always tell the cashier when they ask if anyone helped me that you did even if I didn't ask for any. I HATE having sales people follow me around a store and keep badgering me to see other items. If I have a handful of items that means I'm looking for something and I'll take some suggestions but if I have just one or no items that probably means I'm just browsing.

I'd rather keep the topic on what I'm selling. I am a salesperson, not their new best friend. I agree with "How can I help you?"

I work at a high end clothing store. Some people get snippy when I even ask them if they need help finding anything! Read your customer first. Elderly people enjoy super respectful tones and greetings. High schooler's need a "Sup dude (or w/e). Middle aged people generally like to be asked how their day is going. --oh and, customers like it when you engage their children PLUS children generally don't snap back with, "JUST LOOKING!" --Remember to always be positive and try hard to make it sound like you didn't just drop that convo starter 100X that day. Good luck!

i used to sell vacuum cleaners door to door. and my opener was.
For less than a dollar a day I can put a high powered class one medical air filtration device in your home..and it cleans carpets too.
if you would like to schedual a demonstration i can take appointments. and if you would like to be left alone i can put you on our complementary "do not visit list".
after that it is up to the customer to invite me in or ask to be put on the list. but most like the idea of getting the air filter. and want to know more. after a one hour demonstration i had a 4 out of 5 visit sale rate. but you do not sell too many $2,500 vacuum cleaners in a small town.

Depends on whether you are inside sales or outside sales, but either way, NEVER, EVER ask a question that can be answered with a yes or no!
May start with, Hi, welcome to xxxxx, how may I assist you today?
Then just listen. The next person to speak leaves money on the table.

Don't even have to ask a question; if you can see the person say something like "I love that color your wearing" or where did you get that" otherwise " I hope I'm not interupting is a good starter.

I've been known to say "Hi, is there something I can do for you, to you or about you?"
Now if they are customers I have known for years I'll ask about family or how their life is going since last we spoke
