I wear a jockstrap all the time as I like the feeling of the support it gives me. Compression shorts are good but there still is nothing better than a jockstrap with a cup to protect your balls from injury.

Being a high school football player I can tell you why players don't wear cups. It's because they are uncomfortable. It's the same reason players don't wear the big hip pads and everything. You want to be as comfortable as can be in all those pads so you can have all your mobility and make all the plays. I played the whole season without an injury and I felt more mobile.

In gym class almost no one wears a jockstrap. i do and so do a few of my friends who are on sports teams but most guys just wear their boxers under their gym shorts

the guys on the teams though - hockey, soccer, baseball - mostly wear jockstraps, sometimes with a cup

I read a interview with Tiki Barber and he said it is a "unwritten rule, if you hit me there I'll get you back!" plus you they wear compression shorts. They are great.
