That's nuts: they have no case, unless you're being unjustifiably cruel to the fish (pets), and even then, it'd be law enforcement who would act to relieve you of your fish.
It really depends on your state: the law governs but I'd be surprised if they really cared much about goldfish, unless you were being unjustifiably cruel to them.
Then visit an Asian food store with live produce for sale: why don't they run them in?
These fish are legally yours, and in this case, pets.
Unless they have a verifiable claim of animal cruelty, they have no basis to claim to free your fish.
Tell 'em to call the cops: you'll win, assuming you're treating the fish humanely.
It might be helpful to have witnesses who could testify to the fact that your treated your fish well. It can't hurt.
No worries: the law protects the relationship between a man and his fish!

Animal rights activists can't really apply the law, but the SPCA can. We had that here in Canada, SPCA took two goldfish from a person, have no idea what they did with them.
Are you sure it's Animal rights?
It's getting really stupid out there with SPCA and Animal Rights Act's.

Free your goldfish? You mean kill it? Your gold fish wouldn't survive a day in different water and without its normal food.
They can't set your goldfish free. It's your property.
