my husband use to be addicted to heroin and i was terrified that my 1st baby was going to be affected but the answer is no!!
thankfully he has been clean for over 7 yrs now ( he cleaned up after 1st child was born ) and all my children are fine.
the baby would be affected if he carried on using after the baby was born but mainly coz its hard to be a good father and an addict. my husband is a great dad now but after the 1st baby he had little time for us coz he was always worrying where his next fix would come from more than if the baby needed feeding etc.
the father should try to get clean before the baby comes.
ask your doctor about the affects but i was told not to worry it would be a different story if the mum was using
good luck

Yes. If the mother is in a relationship with an addict, there is always a chance that the fetus/baby can be harmed. For example, does the father smoke? if so, does he smoke in the house with the mother, if so second hand smoke may be a factor. Does he drink? if so, does he become emotionally or physically abusive towards mom?

While many people just assume that the health of the baby is totally dependent upon the mother, the fact is that the mother's enviroment also plays a key role in the health of the fetus/baby, and in most cases is the most important factor when determining the health of a fetus/baby.

Personally, I would suggest that both mom & dad go to drug & relationship counseling. I am sure that they both want what's best for the baby, and taking care of themseves is the first step.

Many drugs have an effect on the man's sperm production, but a father's addiction doesn't hurt the fetus. The fetus is at risk if the mother is using drugs or alcohol on a regular basis.

Yes! Both parents have an effect, not only the mother. My daughter got pregnant by a guy that was a crack addict and she had never done any drugs. When my grandson was born he had to be hospitalized in the neonatal unit for 2 weeks. He is now going to be 4 years old this month and he has had developmental slowness with speech impairments not to mention that he has ADD>serious hyperactivity. The doctors have said that it could be a result of his father doing drugs.

I would think indirectly now, but directly after the baby is born. If you need to seek treatment, do it now, so that this precious life has everything it could ever need, including a healthy and able father.

I'm not sure. But I would recommend getting treatment before you try to get someone pregnant, or if you are already expecting try to get treatment before the baby is born so that you can be a better father.
