Airport code is SJO - name is Jaun Santamaria International Airport - very nice, just the right size

Also, the airport is only about 15 or 20 minutes away from downtown by taxi. It is nowhere near 40 minutes like the person above me said. Although, they are right - it is actually in Alauela. It is 10,000 colones (about $20 USD) for a taxi ride to downtown San Jose. If you're going to downtown, tell the taxi driver "al centro de San Jose, por favor" or "al Plaza de la Cultura, por favor".

If you're staying at a hotel, call them before you go and they will send you a shuttle. Some charge a small fee, and some do it for free. Do not talk to anyone outside the terminal claiming to be from your hotel unless they show ID or are wearing a uniform... or, do not talk to anyone and just approach a red taxi. It is not dangerous, but there are many people that will tell you anything to try and get you to use their services, which are always overpriced.

Use only red taxis with orange triangles - these are certified. DO NOT USE any other taxi, as they are not licensed taxi drivers.

The closest international airport is called Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaría. Although it's believed to be in San José (thus the code SJO), it is really in Alajuela, about 40 minutes from San José.

There is an airport in Pavas, San José, called Tobías Bolaños, and it's only for small airplanes. Some of these small airplanes may come from another country, not just domestic flights.

quite.... easily not something is by ability of that airport.... this is going to take you as much as an hour to get by way of Immigration... you're able to desire to confirm you have your stick to-on flight revealed, because of the fact they gained't help you thru Immigration with out evidence you're leaving. i in my opinion doubt they permit you to in with a flight leaving in only 4 hours, yet let's imagine they do... site visitors around the airport is loopy, so which you wont have time to make it some distance, and prefer I mentioned i won't be able to think of of something around there. Now once you come back to the airport, you should attend in yet another line to pay your go out TAX of around $40. you won't be able to come back in the path of the airport checkpoint with out your little stamp... 5 hours isn't adequate time to pass away the airport, exceedingly related to a international flight.
