I have a vertical, wall gas heater, I turned off the pilot for the summer. As the weather turned colder, I re lit the pilot. However when I turn up the heater using a honeywell mechanical thermostat, nothing happens. I have confirmed multiple times that my pilot light has remained lit. Still no heat.
What are the steps to trouble shoot this issue

Where is the blower located?
How can I determine if it is the blower or the thermostat

Fishing is absolutely right. The thermocouple is designed to make sure the pilot is lit before opening the main gas valve to the burner. Thermocouples wear out! Luckily, the part is cheap and replacement easy.

Problems with a gas heater? Do you have a carbon dioxide monitor? Call a professional. It may cost you a little, but in the long run much cheaper that a decent funeral after you or your loved on dies from fumes.

Sounds like you gas valve is bad, and not allowing gas to flow to the burners. If so, it will need to be replaced.

Sounds like your blower is clogged (this is not a sex joke)..happened to me last year, if you're fixit guy is cool and the blower is just dirty he won't charge you anything to clean, if it's so bad it may need replacing ($135ish)

I am assuming it has some sort of fan. Is that working? Maybe your thermostat isn't working correctly.
