If you live in the US, you can get him a gift card to Walmart or Target. You can put however much you want on the card ($10, $20, $30, etc)
That way he can buy whatever he wants or needs from the store. And it would be hard for him to NOT like it and you know for sure he isn't going to return the gift. I've gotten more compliments from gift cards than actual gifts and gift cards are more appreciated.
They can also put the gift card in little boxes with a ribbon on top, if you wish, to make it look like a present. Or you can put the gift cards with a greeting card and seal it with an evelope.

Or if you have a high paying career, you can get your boss a gift card from Olive Garden (be ready to spend around $75-$100 on it because usually people go with another person to restaurants and rarely eat by themselves)
Olive Garden does not have boxes to put gift cards in though.
You can put the Olive Garden gift card along with a greeting card and seal it with an envelope.

I find gifts for everybody at Barnes & Noble or Borders book stores. Books, games, music, stationery - on EVERY subject. If you know his/her interests, you'll find something there.
