It all depends on your method of washing. Now, if you gently hand wash with an aerating foam gun or the standard two-bucket method and a sheepskin mitt or a rinsed seasponge using a proper shampoo, then no.
However, if you take it to your local car wash bay and try to get a bug off your bumper by blasting it with the power washer two inches away from the car, then yes.
I think you get the picture though, it really depends on how you wash your car, I've seen people use everything from Ajax/Comet cleaner and brillo pads to others using hair shampoo (that's right, hair shampoo) and bathmats (don't ask)...which makes it completely believable that washing your car will wash off the paint.
The only way to wash off the paint is to take off the clearcoat first, and that would require some awfully rough washing (or a few retarded moments at the car wash bay)...sure they paint will be swirled like no other if you wash improperly, but you'll still have your paint.
BTW...waxing will NOT take off your paint, waxing is used a protective product, not as an abrasive or removing product. If anything, wax will prolong the life of your car's paint/clearcoat.

Assuming you aren't washing your car with rough, abrasive materials and brushes, etc. and that you aren't washing it 30 times a day, I think the only thing you have to worry about would be the kind of soap you use.
Most car washing soap should say "clear coat safe." I wouldn't recommended using dish detergent or other soap that's not specifically made for washing cars.
And they say you should wax your car (at least) twice a year to protect the clear coat.

some can scratch your automobile for confident... that is not continually seen today yet over the years they commence to look as a load of high-quality scratches that even us professional's cant get out. yet to be honest there are some automobile washes accessible that use a softer brush mechanism that do not do damage. My suggestion is accessible-wash it ever couple of weeks or so that is going to avert funds and likewise grant you with a mild exercising consultation. Oh yeah and do not use washing up liquid. all the finest. : )

No it's not true. I tend to keep cars for a long time, the last one for 15 years, and the paint was fine, faded from the sun, but ok.

Sure, if your car's paint is already weak, taking it to a high-powered carwash can chip the paint right off. It happened to one of my cars. I should have taken more care of my car's paint by sealing the damaged areas. Live and learn.
