fictional character which was based upon many different persons of the time. there were atrocities committed by " Bloody Bill " Anderson under the guise of fighting for The Confederacy just like there were atrocities committed by the " Red legs " who supposedly fought for the Union. these were mainly committed in Kansas as both the Union and the Confederacy wanted control of this border state.

Back then I'd say their were a lot of Josey Wales' during and after the war. Had those Red Legs done that to your family what would YOU HAVE DONE?

Willliam Thomas (WT) Knighten a Confederate soldier saw a Union officer kill his wife and children in Georgia just after the war.. Knighten is a Welsh name. William slipped around and got a gun and shot the officer and hid out in the Okefenokee Swamp in south Georgia. It would still be a good hideout for outlaws. He met and married a Seminole Indian woman there and had children, including WT Knighten Jr - my grandfather - who went to the Dallas area of Texas and worked for a railroad.. I have not heard of any other vigilante activity. - Joseph William Moore Jr, Abilene,Texas.
