fictional character which was based upon many different persons of the time. there were atrocities committed by " Bloody Bill " Anderson under the guise of fighting for The Confederacy just like there were atrocities committed by the " Red legs " who supposedly fought for the Union. these were mainly committed in Kansas as both the Union and the Confederacy wanted control of this border state.

Willliam Thomas (WT) Knighten a Confederate soldier saw a Union officer kill his wife and children in Georgia just after the war.. Knighten is a Welsh name. William slipped around and got a gun and shot the officer and hid out in the Okefenokee Swamp in south Georgia. It would still be a good hideout for outlaws. He met and married a Seminole Indian woman there and had children, including WT Knighten Jr - my grandfather - who went to the Dallas area of Texas and worked for a railroad.. I have not heard of any other vigilante activity. - Joseph William Moore Jr, Abilene,Texas.
