Firstly, if you have a Zippo, once a month you must clean it.

To Clean:
1. Pull out the container from holder.
2. Unscrew the bottom screw, carefully and take out the flint (this is to be done everytime you want to replace flint).
3. Take out "cotton" orderly as to ease when putting it back in.
4. Take out the wick and cut the burnt ones (you only need to replace it when it is very short).
5. Clean the burned areas with cotton and zippo fluid (do not use fire)
6. Put clean wick back in.
7. Put cotton back in
8. Put flint in and screw fast the screw.
9. Refill zippo fluid
10. Put container back in to holder.
11. Before use, clean you hands and dry zippo holder.

you probably have 6 inches of wick in the lighter.just pull it up with a pair of pliers and cut it off even. be careful when you unscrew the flint screw, the spring will fly away forever....
