Does anyone know where any really interesting places to go in Chicago are? Like boutiques, cafes, etc.? Some quirky, unusual, non-touristy spots? My girlfriends and I are going to be in Chicago for the summer and need some great ideas to have fun. Preferably in the "heart" of Chicago, like the center rather than the outskirts. THanks! :D

July 4th week is the best. taste of chicago and fireworks on Navy pier. Navy Pier is great too. Bars, rides, stores.

There are festivals which are throughout the city. Any Saturday night on the magnificient mile would do. I would go around to the different festivals. Blues Fest, Jazz Fest these are great. As for rock, you can go to several places. The house of the blues is grest. Second City on Wells is political satire.

Resteraunts. I was a big fan of Ed Debevichs. YOu need to go to Johnnys for a BEEF. Ricobennis for a breaded italian steak and frozen lemon ice, taylor street for italian ice and some italian, greek islands for greek food, Go to WRIGLEY FOR A CUBS GAME AND EL jARIN'S AFTER FOR MARGARITIAS BUT DON'T DRINK TOO MUCH AS IT WILL KNOCK YOU ON YOUR BUTT AFTER 1.
Cubby bear is good too and a cub tradition. The Lincoln Park zoo is free and I use to run through it.
The beaches like oak street are great.

If you want to spend the $$$$$$ you should go to the aquariam as it rocks. SHed Aquairiam's shark tank is worth the $20.00 nEXT TO IT IS THE PLANETARIAM AND CLOSE TO THE NATURAL HISTORY MUESEM, BUT THE BEST IS STILL THE SCIENCE MEUSEM WHICH IS MUCH FARTHER AWAY.

YOU HAVE TO SEE NIKE TOWN, AND THE SHOPPING. A TRIP TO FIELDS DOWNTOWN ALSO IS AN EXPERIENCE AS IT IS WELL OVER A 100 YEARS. GOOD LUCK

Ed Debevich's for sure, A night Club (if it's still there) Excaliber, it was a blast but it's been 8 years or so since I went there. The Museum of Science and Industry Very Cool!! A carriage ride around the city, all seasons. Michigan Avenue. Hop in a cab and tell the driver what your looking for and they know everywhere to take you. Have a great time!!

for boutiques and stuff there are a lot of things to do around the lakeview area, which is the whole street of southport. they have really cute boutiques and small cafes and restaraunts. grab lunch at the john hancock's signature room for a good view and it's not expensive food either. you can also check out some local bars and entertainment around state st. and hubbard at howl at the moon (duel piano bar) or head on over to rock bottom bar and grill and they got awesome beer they brew themself. check out chicaog-scene.com and metromix.com for more info on things~!

just to add to the other answers...there are also many neighborhood ethnic festivals going on all summer...check with the city to see where and when..I go to the Ginza Japanese festival the 2nd weekend in August..the festivals are usually free or very inexpensive with GREAT food..also pretty inexpensive..and educational.

Also, the Air and Water show is great and it is the 3rd weekend in August every year.
