Why do you ask old chap? Obviously you have some doubt that you are proud to be British, otherwise you would not be trying to confirm your beliefs on here! Or maybe you are not a Brit !

Which people can be proud of themselvesf? If you were to dig up all the dirty washing in each country in the world, you would always find something. History cannot be changed, but the results can be seen today. From these we have to learn and go forward, which, obviously is not very easy as the whole world is struggling still today!

I was born and educated in England and left when I was about 18, but I am still proud to be a Brit! This does not mean that I support the government and their policies, but if you compare England to many other countries, there are not many "better" ones in the world if you take all facts into consideration!

America didn't invent the aeroplane, car,TV,radio or computer; all these facets of daily life plus the train opriginally eminated from Britain or France. Many international companies are American, but many are European such as Airbus, Siemens, Mercedes Benz etc. Much of the American long distance bus system is owned by British transport companies such as First Group and Stagecoach; British companies such as ICI and British Aerospace export throughout the world including to America; the London based financial dealing industry is one of the biggest in the world. As for America being the beacon of freedom - I have never encountered so many petty rules and bureaucracy governing every aspect of life as I encountered on visits to America. More importantly, and here America and Britain have a great deal in common, the broad mass of the population are kept largely uneducated and conditioned by a powerful dumbed down media to see only material and monetary gain as having any real value. In playing the role of 'superpower' America is as hated around the world as it is admired; the cost of the continual wars and invasions has created an enormous national debt which no President has properly dealt with, and even threatens the minority of Americans who are still wealthy and live an affluent lifestyle.

Let us not forget that pride is one of the 7 deadly sins.
It si good to be satisfied with your forefathers achievements whilst respecting and acknowledging their sins.
The empire did do a lost of good bringing christian values and Law and order where there was non but let us not forget that these came after the fighting and the treasure seeking.
That said it is great to travel the world and speak your native small island language and be understood the world over.

The British people are very proud and extremely patriotic but then so are the people of the USA and other countries.

I don't think that colonisation was a particularly good phenomenon.
