500 if each song is 4 minutes. So depending on the time of the song but if they are all exactly 4 minutes- a 1 GB will hold 500 songs!

It depends on a multitude of things, such as;
length of the song.
Format of the songs (mp3,aac,wma,etc...)
Digital Quality (128, 192, 256,etc... kbps)
If it is DRM'd or not
What meta data is within the songs (Artist Info)
and loads of other factors but for the most common format "mp3" which is about 1 min per 1mb, and the average song is 4mins which would be 4mbs. Knowing that there is just over 1000mb in 1gb, we can say that you will be able to store about 250 songs on your Ipod.

It really depends on the recording quality, as well as the length. Most good quality MP3s are around 3-4MB so you should expect to put around 250-300.
