Cory Patterson, he had one hell of a season in 2006. It seems that everyone who leaves the Cubs for another team has a great career after moving on. Greg Maddux(Atlanta), Rafeal Palmerio, Joe Carter, Steve Traschel,Jon Lieber, Moses Alou, I could keep going.

If you are looking for the best retired Cub player..... Lee Smith
Your question isnt very clear on what you are looking for.

There is a reason why they call Ernie Banks "Mr. Cub." Aside from his well earned place in the Hall of Fame, who couldn't love a guy who always thought it was a great day for a baseball game? After suffering many indignities with the Cubs, including a tenth-place finish behind the hapless Mets in 1966, he led the Cubs to contend in each of the next three years (though credit also goes to Ferguson Jenkins, Ken Holtzman, Glenn Beckert, Don Kessinger, Ron Santo, Randy Hundley and Billy Williams).

Perhaps he did not inspire poetry like Tinker, Evers and Chance, but I saw him play and he was as good as anyone I have ever seen.

The best tribute to Ernie Banks that I remember is that Cubs fans made an effort to get him on the playoff roster in 1984 so he could finally have a World Series ring. Who knows? Maybe the Cubs would have beaten the Padres with him on the roster.

And I'm not even a Cubs fan.

I like the Grover Cleveland Alexander answer, and I would also like to give a nod to the late Ken Hubbs, whose career was cut short by a plane crash.

Rick Monday stole the day when he grabbed the American Flag
in the outfield to keep it from being burned. He did it at a Dodgers/Cubs game and had played for both teams.
Ernie Banks is Mr. Cub
Ron Santo is an inspiration to everyone
Ken Hubbs a tragic accident kept him from being a big star.

I'd have to agree with Mommy & Evil and vote for Ernie Banks. Ryno was always my favorite baseball player (past or present), and I still have to say Ernie gets the nod without much of a second thought.
