Like Wm. for William or Thos. for Thomas (actually, those are the only two I can think of). They're not nicknames, they're not initials... is there a word for it?

Generally, they're called 'Nicknames' and are often shorter versions of a name. For example, Thomas becomes Tom, Nicholas becomes Nick, Rebecca becomes Bec, Elizabeth becomes Liz or Beth.
