You rarely see on TV or magazines Brown skin or dark skin black women protrayed as beautiful as lighter skin or white women. The only dark skin woman that gets some attention is Gabrielle Union...why is that?

A nigerian model Oluchi Onweagba who is dark skin doesn't get as nearly as much exposure as lighter skin models like Noemi Lenoir.

It's not personal to me, I love my brown complexion fine but I honestly don't feel like Brown skin or dark skin women are put on the same level of beauty as light skin or White women.

many cultures still see white skin or lighter skin as the defining point of beauty. In India, for example, the dowry for light skinned women is much lower than for darker skin women because the latter are harder to marry off. my wife is a darker skin Indian woman and she's beautiful inside and out and your question brings out a truth that is troublesome in our world, isn't it?
Peace

Definitely untrue. Black women of all shades vary. some are strikingly beautiful and some are plain. Several of my cousins are very dark with long silky black hair, a faces that should be carved in marble it is so beautiful and a figures that would stop a bullet train. I am very light skinned, we have a family resemblance and I notice that we attract the same amount of attention. I agree that the media definitely under represents the diversity among black women. But just like the bias towards thin women; the real world does not reflect TV.

Unfortunately, that's true. It's sad, but for the most part, society equates beauty with light skin (with the exception of models like Alec Wek coming onto the fashion scene). It seems that a lot of people have mentally fallen victim to the media's elite standard of beauty: long, straight hair, light eyes, fair complexion, thin build, etc. Sadly, it seems that the lighter her complexion, the prettier a woman is considered to be, not only in this country, but all over the world. But those who have a more well-rounded opinion of beauty consider that kind of thinking ridiculous and realize that beautiful women come in all colors, shapes and sizes.

I think darker skinned women can be gorgeous and I do not understand the prejudice in both the white and the black communities against women with dark skin. The model Alek Wek is one of the most beautiful women in the world.

I think that this is a remnant from the "bad old days" when someone defined as "high yaller" was looked on as more attractive...thus, Lena Horne, Harry Belafonte and Ella Fitzgerald, who were of lighter skin, were more accepted by the predominate white society. They still are (Halle Berry) but are often perceived by Blacks as "not as black"
All of this is a byproduct of a race that was and essentially still is manipulated, denigrated, and looked upon as inferior by the white majority. In answer to your question, blacks with lighter skin are looked on by whites as more attractive, etc...because they may be a mix of African and European parentage. This is prejudice to the nth degree.
Is this how things should be. NO! but...Grace Jones is an excellent example of one who is more "black", and was accepted as an actress, model, etc... Things are changing for the better, and "mixed" marriages are quite accepted in the US today

It may be a very good question, but I pay much less attention (especially as I get older) to the outside of a woman as I do to what's inside. When the lights go off there is no black or white, but year in and year out, will she be good company? Does she have something worth saying? Does she return my respect? Is she kind, funny, forgiving? Does she resent life, have a temper, hold grudges? A universe of difference resides therein and exactly 0% has to do with the melanin content of her skin.
Peace to all,
;-)

well thats how it is according to the media, but that shouldnt matter of course. Its like that with many other cultures as well. Hispanic people too, the darker women arent considered as good looking as the lighter ones, and there is a much broader skin color spectrum within hispanic people. Its strange that it doesnt apply to white people though, they are always trying to get tanner (darker) to look better, hmmmmmm . . . .

Yes. Unfortunately.
I must warn the one that mentioned that white guys go for darker ones, that is a fetish thing and white men do not dictate what is beautiful.
Oprah is the only dark-skinned black woman that gets any real props in U.S. media. America doesn't mind getting advice and recipes from a dark-skinned woman, but sex symbol? God forbid.
I'm actually boycotting Hollywood right now, because I'm tired of seeing the dark actresses in modernized Mammy roles and increasingly every black actor is seen with a white or latina actress in the movies.
You want my bucks Hollywood, start representing me, too.

It is true that darker skin attracts less than fair one.But a slim and beautiful figure attracts people.More over attraction it self is not that important.A well behaved well natured lady is liked by all for ever instead of a fair bad natured girl who can attract for few minutes.Good nature is ever lasting ever attracting.Beauty is but skin deep and goes off in old age.

miss ursie has never heard of will smith, denzel washington, wesley snipes, the wayons brothers, halley berry oprah, cuba gooding jr., samual l jackson, etc.. the list goes on sweetheart. I myself love dark skinned women, i was in the marines we used to call one of the guys kiwi, as in black shoe polish, because he was extremely dark, the only way you could see him in the dark is if his eyes were open or if he was smiling! even the blacks messed with him, in fun of course. it seems that women who are really dark have more masculine features, and that its rare to find a beautiful woman who is so dark. Oprah is not that dark by the way. venus williams and sister tennis players are dark and beautiful and conciderd to be sex symbols.
