Ok i have a 10 gallon Guppy fish tank.i got it from my science teacher like 6 months ago, b/c it was the end of the school year, and i had wanted them so she gave them all to me. they were fine for a while, untill about 2 months later, they started finally having tons of babies(as guppies normally do, i guess)but after that, the female mom(or what i would guess would b the mom) would die a few days after, and every female would die not long after having babies..so now i have like 10 males and 2 females and like 20 babies...also i have like 10 baby snails recently, but that doesnt really have anything to do w/ it...i know i should have about 20 females, and as soon as i can afford to get that many females,i will. but i dont know why the females keep dying?..i have had another fishtank for like 2 yrs before i had this one, so i do know how to care for fish.the males are doing ok, but the females just keep dying for some reason and i wasnt sure why.i dont treat them any diferent. well thx

All over the US there has been a disease spreading through Guppy tanks for the past several months and it hits females harder than males! I lost almost all of my girls before learning that Mardel brand Tetracycline tabs kills the bug. It will make your water nasty red and puts out scads of foam but works (2+ months and no more losses). The idea of using the Mardel instead of others is that the foam gets all areas of the tank/filter clean instead of just the water.

When I had guppies the females would die shortly after giving birth also. Babies and males did fine, so I'm assuming it's something with the birthing process. Maybe they retain dead babies, or junk they aren't supposed to and die from it. Ask the pet store owner, they would have some good theories for you. Good luck.

Read this: it will give you some good information. I think your problem is you're not separating the females after they have their babies.
