When our children were small they opened one present each on Christmas eve. Now that they are grown, we open them whenever they arrive here at our home. Everything changes once your children grow up. But one tradition remains constant...we call all of our relatives to wish a traditional "Christmas Eve Gift" which is a custom coming from England over 200 years ago.

When my grandmother was alive we began to celebrate around 4:00 Christmas Eve. She was elderly and could not see well after dark..it became our usual Christmas Eve dinner followed by gifts. The families celebrate individually with their little ones on Christmas Day.

My family has done that before. Cuz sometimes one of my parents would have to work (they work in the medical field, so they can't always get it off). We'd have Christmas dinner on Christmas eve, and open presents from the family after dinner. But Santa still always came that night, and we'd get those presents in the morning.

When I was a young pup, we always opened presents on Christmas Eve, about 8 o'clock after supper and the evening chores were done. We did so because that was how my beloved ma did the Christmas thing when she was young. Christmas day was always spent going to see relatives. I married a gentleman whose family opened presents on Christmas morning. When our first Christmas came, we compared our families' traditions and he liked mine better so we do our Christmas thing on Christmas Eve. Since we live in upper MI where there is always snow for Christmas, we go skiing because one of the local ski hills offers dirt cheap lift tickets on Christmas day.

My mom was born in Vienna, Austria. We celebrate Christmas like she did there...on the 24th.

After dinner, we all gather in one room, sing carols etc and wait for the Christkindl to ring the bell. Christkindl (the Christ child) brings the gifts, not Santa Claus. *His day is Dec. 6th. Once the bell is rung, we all go out to the tree - which has been fully decorated/lit. Gifts are opened and we cap the night with Midnight Mass.

On Christmas Day, we open the stockings - which were left by elves trailing Christkindl. This is the day for visiting family and friends.

When I was little, we use to do that at our house, but we got up at 2am. I liked getting up that early, but the drawback was we had to go back to bed at some point. When I got married and had a little one, we opened one gift on Christmas Eve and waited til morning to open the rest. I hated going back to bed after all the gifts were opened, and had to wait to play with alot of the stuff we got fom Mom and Dad, and Santa. That is one tradition I did not keep. Neither did my siblings.

Christmas Eve is when we always celebrate Christmas - Ukrainian style. We have our big meatless Holy Supper, followed by carol singing, opening of presents, carolling at others' homes, then a late Liturgy.

My family opens up one present on Xmas eve and the rest in the morning. That was my idea because my husbands family opened all presents on Xmas eve and there was nothing left for the morning.

I've done it before. I heard it's a tradition in Germany to open one present on Christmas Eve...that's what my German friend said at least...
