it's life is about 6 months, but can still burn up to 10 months, starting a car with old gas can cause severe knocking. Try to add a gallon of fresh gas every month or 2. this seems to work well for me :)

Yes. Two things happen:

1. In it's refining, modern gasoline picks up lots of additives including it's "octane". Through a continual cycle of evaporation, condensation, etc., it breaks down. Think of the octane rating like carbonation in soda pop. After awhile, the fizz is gone.

2. The various chemicals that make up modern gasoline will separate into layers. Without some intense re-mixing equipment, it's a lost cause at that point.

Gasoline chemically breaks down as the volatile elements leave. Old gas doesn't vaporize well and it's vapors that burn to create power.

If you're going to be storing gasoline for longer than a month or so, I would add Sta-Bil, an additive that stops the degradation.

Yes it does. If you let the vehicle sitsfor extended periods of time make sure the tank is almost empty. and when you start again put in fresh gas and a fuel system treatment like STP gas treatment or fuel injector cleaner. If it is old gas in a can use it for the lawn mower or as a paint thinner.
