My 2003 Vibe idles low at stoplights and shakes like the engine is going to die (although it doesn't and usually the RPM's move up and down a bit, but always stay below 1000). One mechanic has said this is because its in need of a tuneup (it has 40k on it, bought it at 18k, have done regular maintenance since then, but no tuneups), another says more than likely the fuel injection system is dirty, and that the tuneup is out of the question at 40k. Who is right?

Ok guys, I realize Pontiac has had a bad rep in the past. But honestly aside from this I have had NO problems with this car, and its true - maybe that's cause Toyota essentially built the thing. Personally, I love it, great fuel economy and pretty good size. But thanks for the input ;)

Your Vibe is a great car. It is built by Toyota and is the same as a Matrix. That said you could have any one of the small problems that newer cars all can have.. IAC (Idle Air Control Valve) would be my first bet. Or you may need your computer re flashed which will adjust it's control instructions.. I would let the dealer (Pontiac or Toyota) check it for you.. They have the proper testing equipment to find the problem.

Get a tune up. That sounds like it would fix your problem. The 2nd mechanic could be right, though.. it kind of sounds like a fuel injector problem. But, try a tune up first. It's a lot cheaper than your other option, and it's part of routine maintenance, you're going to have to do it anyway. If that doesn't work, then yeah.. it's most likely the fuel injector.

just today 7/11/15. I had corrosion built up around My +pos. post. I went to start and found that. I repaired it. When it started, like normal, I noticed the idle had lowered. Only by one mark, but it was enough to make me wonder. The battery was low. so while I changed the cable end and cleaned the post I had a charger on. Start and same thing. Altinator charging at 13.9 at the time.

What's the problem? The problem is, you bought a Pontiac Vibe. (Sorry, just feeling like an as_hole right now.. But I really do hate those cars. They're just plain ugly to me.)
Anyway........

Uh it's a Pontiac, there will always be something wrong with it. My husbands Pontiac needed a new engine at 38,000 miles. 2 years later, it has been an Engine, Transmission, 3 sets of tires, 3sets of brakes, rotors, windshield, new door panels, the glove box door is broken (wear) new fuel line, new brake lines....list will go on and on. It has never been in an accident and always has regular maintenance, my suggestion get something that is the farthest thing from a Pontiac. Good luck. Your car is the devil.

if no codes, likely to be throttle or iac needs cleaning.dirty fuel injectors usually cause trouble at speed also. do a tune up now, 40,000 miles are more than enough. replace air & fuel filter, have oil changed.

The first lne of diagnostics would be to have it scanned for codes ,and then checked for software updates.then again it could be a dirty throttle plate or IAC valve, but it should set a code for that .Also a vacuum leak would cause a higher than normal idle condition!

could be a few things, #1 there is an 'idle motor' on it, they go bad on almost any vehicle, they are relatively in-expensive and easy to replace, you could also have a vacuum leak, a bad plug or wire, could be bad fuel, any number of things really, your best bet is to find somebody to hook up to the diagnostics port on it
