Many countries have a traditional time of giving thanks after the harvest is brought in. That's the origin of the American Thanksgiving holiday, too. The Pilgrims were grateful to God for the wonderful harvest they'd had, and were also -- or so we've been told -- grateful to the Indians for teaching them to survive in this strange land. So they had a feast to celebrate. It probably wasn't on November, since that's so long after the harvest, but that part really doesn't matter. This is when we celebrate it now.
Back in the Old Testament, one of the festivals God commanded the Hebrews to celebrate was a festival of giving thanks, so there are Biblical roots to it, too. You can use a concordance to find exactly where it's mentioned. If you don't have one, Google "online concordance" and see what comes up.
Nowadays, a good exercise for Thanksgiving is to take out a piece of paper and write down everything you have that you're thankful for. If people's names are on your list, please tell them that you're thankful for them. Be sure to include everything you can think of. My favorite part is having to go to a second sheet of paper! Pray through that list and thank God for all the many blessings He's given you.

Well there's real meaning to it, but the real meaning is to first celebrate because everybody gets the day off. Secondly a lot of us get either a gift certificate to buy a turkey or the turkey itself (raw or cooked). Another good reason would be because we drink like crazy (not me). Stuff like that make the current meaning of Thanksgiving Day....
Unfortunately it has faded away a little bit. Let's thank God for what we eat that day, and for everyday of the year that we get to eat...

This holiday was actually instituted by George Washington, and again by Abraham Lincoln, specifically to give thanks to God for all we have. Yes it does have to do with the Pilgrims and their harvest, because they had a very hard time of it when they came to the new world. But most of all, it's a time for us to reflect on the blessings God has bestowed on us in this country.
