a climber that is not attractive to possums and has beautiful flowers. At the moment I have a climbling bush rose and it has never had the opportunity to grow to it's full potential or even get any flowers as the possums just love to eat it. I tried everything to get rid of them, the possums, but nothing worked and I would never shoot them or poison them. So my solution now is to pull it out and put in a climber that they won't eat.

Have you heard of clemantis? Its a beautiful flowering climber. There are many other good climbers to choose from but may not be showy with flowers. Examples that come to mind are climing hydragea, and a whole array of ivy types. The fact that u have opossums tells me you have a mild climate and therefore a much broader list of possible plant varieties than I can list. A trip to a local garden center or nursury would be ur best choice for help and advice about what you can grow locally as a climber. First however, I think you need to discover why the opossums have targetted ur rose bush. Assuming it's food (rose hips)they are after or the smell of ur roses, then any other type of climber should be ok. ( avoiding things that produce fruit , If thats the problem)

Star jasmine is nice. It is green all year long and during the late spring and early summer it smells wonderful, especially in the evenings and at night. We have a possum every night and it doesn't touch it.

Gelsemium sempirvirens, a yellow jasmine, is poisonous. They will not eat it (or they will learn not to!). Solanum, or potato vine, is also poisonous, belonging to the same family as deadly nightshade.

Morning glory is also poisonous, but it is invasive.

Some passionvines will give mammals a tummyache.

there is a product that keeps dogs from chewing stuff and it is called " no chew". it is a spray that you can get at wal-mart and it taste bad to dogs and cats, try spraying the plant and hopefully it will do the same for the possums. good luck.

You can try morning glory or wisteria, but they both are evasive so be careful.
