My HD kind of beeps in a particular sequence
This is my impression -
beep...beep...beep...shhhh....beep...beep....beep...shhh
The beeping is not a real beep, it is just the sound of the HD working but amplified. When this happens the red light showing HD activity stays on continually. This happens when I open certain programs like Mozilla Thunderbird, etc... It happens for about 5mins at a time, and only when I open certain programs, or try to do certain things. When this happens, the whole computer freezes sort of. It may be a bad motor in the HD because it is fairly old but it boots up fine.

What if anything can I do the solve this problem, perhaps even just temporarily? Is there some kind of diagnostics I can run to see what the problem is?

If there is any other information needed please do tell...

I think you already know there's a good chance your hard drive is on it's last leg. Back up your documents, emails address list, favorites, music, photos to a CD just in case. The link below will take you to a list of programs, some free that might give you a better idea if your hard drive is failing. I brought System Mechanic when I had the same problem, turned out to be something with an "index," it fixed it, works fine. Best of luck.

Time to Back up all your data and important files. The Hard Drive is telling you that it is about to stop working.
You need to do this as soon as possible to avoid potential costly data recovery on a failed hard drive.

After backing up the files and data, buy or aquire a new hard drive and install it.

Sorry, but trying to repair a failed hard drive can actually cost more then a new one.

As not undemanding drives age, they get louder. it is merely a actuality of existence. whilst gaining access to information, it is going to click louder and louder. additionally, it will make whirring noises whilst it is on. If it is making damn noises, despite the fact that, which potential it is approximately to fail and that's time for a sparkling not easychronic. That noise is probable a processor fan or a case fan, despite the fact that, and the simplest thank you to isolate the noise is to instruct your notebook on with the case open, and stop each and every fan in my view with your finger or a extreme-grip merchandise (such as a pencil eraser). replace any loud followers with new followers. If it is the potential grant fan, replace it with a sparkling potential grant of equivalent or extra desirable wattage (and as an advantage, you will get a potential grant with a greater exhaust fan than what's at the instant put in on it).
