I NEVER say "Good" or "Fine". It's just an automaton response.

For example, a guy sat down next to me a few days ago.
"Hey Link, how are ya?"
"Don't ask."
"Why's that?"
"You don't care."
"Yeah you're right. I don't. But I'm curious."

It's rare to find honesty like that. But seriously, when people ask, they don't care about your response, because they presume you'll say "I'm okay," or something prepared. I always, *always* take an extra second or two to find a better word to use. eg. capricious (whimsical), despondent/phlegmatic (unresponsive), acrimonious (bitter), convivial (joyful) et cetera. But then again, most people don't care what you answer, so you can just say "Good" and you'll get the same response.

i think it depends on how well you know the person. or the situation. like sometimes you ask that and people will say okay... and if say something like oh just okay? then they would talk about it. or sometimes people say pretty good instead of good lol. if its a close friend though that asks you say your parents are just getting a divorce and your upset about this. but your not really showing it. a neighbor passes you on the sidewalk and says oh hi how are you you dont really say to them oh im so sad and distressed because my parents are getting divorced but if it was your best friend asking you you could answer a little more personally... well thats just how i think of it anyway... =]

No. It's strange tho. I never say that as a greeting. I say Hi. Yet, if they return the hi with a how are you, they are offend it I just nod.
If I say fine, I feel forced to go thru the same dumb routine with them.

I don't expect more, but I, myself, usually answer honestly. I don't get too presonal, but I might say I'm tired or "eh" or something. And when I am doing good, I don't answer it like a robot. I have enthusiasm because Hey! I'm doing good!

pretty much it is just a greeting, and most people expect just a fine or ok .but be careful sometimes people tell you.

Not really, except for "not too bad." I get that reply a lot from many different people when I ask how they are.

No. This is a social greeting, meant to show you are a friendly person.

WE ONLY ASK THOSE THAT WE KNOW WE'LL GET ONE OF THOSE ANSWERS. WHEN YOU GET OLDER YOU REMEMBER WHICH ONES WILL TIE YOU UP FOR AN HOUR WITH UNKNOWN NAMES AND FACES. SEEMS TO BE THE WAY IT WORKS.
GOD BLESS
