People by doing so are actually trying to hide their true nature. Some, do it, mainly to show themselves strong. They want others to know that they are unaffected by what has happened.

Everyone do it one time or other. But in reality giving vent to our emotions help let our self go off the stress or pain or atleast ease it which is sure better than carrying it around. We often forget that Time, heals anything and everything, however bad it was and people forget things after a while... And for some who know it, it is easier said than done.

I think it takes great guts to put your emotion out as it is in a given situation, without hiding it!

Very good question indeed!
I have come up with an interesting possibility.

Emotion has great power over us. We know we are helpless at the hands of our emotion. So, we consider our emotion as a weakness, especially if it is a sad one. And no one wants to show his weakness to another. The reason may be that we do not want to open our vulnerability to a third person whom we can not trust totally.

May be, that is why we keep controlling but then give vent to our sad emotions the moment we find someone very close to us or even when someone genuinely sympathises with us.

I think we suppress emotions at these times because we are trying to get through something, and we don't want to fall to pieces just yet. It is a kind of self-preserving numbness. My Mom was orphaned as a child and never dealt with these feelings. Then her cat died and you can guess what happened. These powerful emotions all came to the surface at once! She has been trying to deal with all of this stuff for weeks now. At least now she feels safe enough to experience these emotions. Just my thoughts!

I think its because human emotion runs so deep that we feel if we don't try to keep it in check somehow the hurt we feel will be more than we can bear. If you've ever lost a loved one you know how profound the feeling of grief is. If you've ever cried so hard that your ribs were aching and you were gasping for breath, you know how painful emotion can be. I think we hide our emotions in a futile way to save ourselves from that pain even though its more healing to let our feelings out.

People react stoic or unemotional in bad situations for many different reasons. Perhaps they do not know how to act, or they are in shock, they may have been brought up not to display thier emotions in public or they may just be private people. No one knows how a person is when they are alone under certain circumstances.

Emotions are pointless conditioned responses which rarely make a bad situation better. To control your emotions is to control yourself, something which many philosophers have said is the highest virtue.

Um because they are modest and they don't want to publicly display their emotions, they know that sometimes crying in front of other people can make someone else feel uncomfortable and they are trying to be considerate of the public.
