I'm curious what some stereotypes/preconceived ideas are that you've heard/been taught concerning Native Americans/American Indians/First Nations People. Or maybe even the mental picture you have of a Native person. Please, don't hold back.

I'm talking generalized steroetypes concerning all native americans.
if you're native, of some sort, what is the most rediculous question you've been asked/steroetype you've had to debunk?

Common stereotypical thoughts of our American Indians are that they are always stoical, the men never needing to shave, and they all share a common mysticism with nature. Yet if you look at the northwestern tribes and even the Nations living in Mexico, you'll see mustaches and beards are prevalent.
Just last week I met a Shoshone/Bannock fellow having a two-day growth on his face. We laughed about this stereotyped image.
Much of their inherited religions are earth connected, however, and many still follow it.

I've not heard any, but then again I am from a different country yet I am an indigenous person of my country and I am sure we have very similar sterotypes aimed at our cultures. Im just saying some not all.
A main one seems to be for one persons wrong from that cultural group, we all seem to get tarnished with the same brush, from the wider non-indigenous community.

It is so awesome to see positive stereotypes, however, that is not as common as it should be. I was once engaged to an Apache and most stereotypes I viewed were that they were all alcoholics and lazy and refused to work and better themselves. I personally have never met any Native like that.

well the biggest stereotype is that theyre a bunch of drunks. I live in an area where most of em are. I think alcoholism is a big problem for them. i don't know about other areas in the country and i hope its not true of them elswhere. but here in northern WI and upper MI it is.

I was taught that the native Americans were a brave and proud people that were screwed by the white man and made to be almost extinct by our predjudice and fear. I always thought it sad that a race and culture were almost wiped out by ignorant caucasians who feared what they didn't understand.
