The plantation owners used the slaves to harvest the fields. This made the harvest cheap, but not really efficient. The slaves did not work unless they were forced to for obvious reasons. They did not do any more than they had to do.

The slave owners also spent a lot of time trying to keep the slaves from running away. They were constantly using fear and violence to keep the slaves from escaping. This allowed the slave owners to learn a high tolerance for awful violence.

The other affect was that many of the owners had relations with the slave women and helped to bring many half American/half African children into the world. At that time the Africans would not have considered themselves Americans and would not have wanted to be Americans. They would have preferred to go home.

The second generation of slaves only knew America and just wanted their freedom.

Take care,
Troy
