I drove away with the gas pump in my gas tank. I returned to the gas station and they made me fill out paperwork. I've received a letter from BP that says they will estimate repairs and send me a bill. Does anyone no how much this will cost? I realize it was a stupid move but...geeeezh! The thing had an automatic breakaway feature on it, so there didn't seem to be much damage.

You should have just kept driving and hung the hose up in your garage. But next time have one less beer at the bar before you gas up.

It happened with us but with a propane hook up to an rv, the guy was getting his rv propane tank filled while filling up with gas ( I do not recomend this) and forgot he was also filling up with propane. It had an automatic breakaway feature but it requires us to shut down our pumps and bleed the pump's system so it won't squirt fuel all over the place, then checking for leaks and damage. Then comes the pump start up, checking to make sure there are no leaks and its properly grounded to the pump. If it was a small gas station they may charge you for the time it was out of service, the time of the tech to fix the pump. Most gas attendants do not know how to re-connect a pump as its not part of their job description.

They usually don't charge people for that. the hoses are set up with a quick release like you said. It really don't cause any damage to the pump or hose, and if you returned it, they should thank you for coming back, and being honest. To keep you as a customer. If you get a large bill, consult a lawyer, Don't be afraid to call the headquarters.

I did this once, and they took care of it. They said it happens all the time. I don't think you should have to pay.
