The cigarette manufacturers took their commercials off the air voluntarily. The reason they did that was that congress past a law requiring TV stations to give free time for public service announcements against smoking. The more the the TV industry advertised the more exposure the PSA's would get and the more free commercial time the stations would have to give a way. It was decided that it was no longer economical to do television advertising on TV.

There is already censorship of advertising for cigarettes. They are not allowed to advertise on television or radio, only in magazines and on billboards. Why don't we restrict the advertising of pharmaceuticals on television and radio? People see these ads, are convinced the drug will help them and go request it from their doctor. No one reads the fine print, no one really knows what long term use will do to their health. Much like cigarettes, pharmaceutical drugs should list PLAINLY what the warnings are.

No........you don't see cigarette commercials anymore and people still smoke. Some products don't need advertisements, and yet we suffer through some idiotic commercials. People will buy what they need or want...........regardless.
