I never watched General Hospital, but it's been all over the radio that Laura is awake from the coma, what happened and how long has she been in it?

She was in a catatonic state not a coma. She killed her step-father because she thought he was going to hurt her, he wasn't. She had a breakdown which spiraled into Catatonia. I wasn't able to watch during that time but an watching now. You can prolly find more details at abc.com
Oh BTW the actress's name is Genie Francis and she wasn't the original Laura. An actress names Stacey Baldwin played her from 74-76, Genie took over in 77 I started watching when Genie had the role so I can't see anyone but her in it.

Laura has been in a coma for 4 years. I don't know if you know the history of Luke and Laura, and it's too much to try to explain, but I will say this... Laura is one of those characters that no one except the original actress can play. just like Susan Lucci is the only person who could every be Erica on AMC. Well Jenny Frances, the actress who plays Laura left GH four year ago and instead of killing her off (that's a big no-no), they made her go crazy and end up in a coma. Jenny returned to GH last week and know the Luke & Laura starts back up.

she has been in her coma for 4 years....she killed her step father while he was trying to sedate her for remembering that she had killed one of his mistresses when she was a teenager....she was catatonic till Robin discovered a miracle drug and Luke decided to give it a try...and it worked....
