If you believe the landbridge story connecting Asia to America, then Asian nomads first approached onto America and became the Native Americans after settling down.

If not, then the vikings were the first people to come to America with evidence. There are remains of a settlement up on Newfoundland which ceased to survive. Christopher Columbus (who was looking for the India in Asia), winded up landing in one of the Carribean islands and made that contineant famous in Europe.

Tim-Tim is correct. The viking given the credit is Erik the Red. Amerigo Vespucci was NOT an explorer but a mapmaker. Christopher Columbus used to be given credit, but not anymore.

A teacher will probably say Columbus, But in reality it was either the Vikings(Newfoundland) or Chinese(California) around 900 AD but since they did so around the same time no one knows who was technically first. But If you want to get REAL technical the archaic definition of Discover is to make known; reveal; disclose. Then it was Columbus who "discovered" America since he "revealed" that America existed.

Early American history began in the collision of European, West African, and Native American peoples in North America. Europeans “discovered” America by accident, then created empires out of the conquest of indigenous peoples and the enslavement of Africans. Yet conquest and enslavement were accompanied by centuries of cultural interaction—interaction that spelled disaster for Africans and Native Americans and triumph for Europeans, to be sure, but interaction that transformed all three peoples in the process.
