have just replaced the rear end and checked all mounts engine and transmission, noise is not consistent with engine or wheel speed, just comes and goes as it wants to. sounds like a large rock or number of rocks about 1 per second, hitting the under side of the vehicle. will not make the noise on a lift. it will only do it when you drive it

The carrier bearing that supports the drive shaft may be bad. Look under the truck and grab the driveshaft with both hands and is if it moves too easy.

3500 is a good price for it, i bout mine with 114,600 on it for 3200. mines a 95 slt clubcab 4x4 with the v-6. frankly id its seems to have been taken care of and wasnt abused it will last. the v6 is readily upgradeable for power.mine has the bosch platinum+2 sparkplugs,k&n air filter, and a hi-flo thrush exhaust muffler. avg fuel econ is about 16 in the city. not bad considering it weighs 2 tons.

I would check your universal joints or constant velocity joints. Have you checked for something loose on you exhaust system? It sounds if something is loose under your vehicle. When you get it on a rack again look for anything that could be loose.
