Yes - it allows the skull to grow as the brain grows to its full capacity; once the brain has grown to capacity, The skull will close and there will no longer be a soft spot so the brain will be protected; the human body is really amazing when you think about it.

You have had a lot of "YES" answers but my sister's first born had NO soft spot. I was present at the birth and it was HORRIBLE. She wanted an all natural birth and when things started to go not so well, it was too late for an epidural. My sister was administered a narcotic for the pain. The doctor and midwife were arguing about whether or not she needed a c-section - NOT knowing that the baby had no soft spot and that was the reason why my sister had a hard time pushing the baby out. It was too late for an emergency c-section because the baby had already passed somewhat thru the cervix. Anyway, the doctor and midwife agreed on a 2'nd degree episotomy and a vacuum extractor and forcepts to pull the baby out. The doctor was pulling so hard that his arms were shaking. BUT, the baby girl was fine even after literally being pulled out of my sister. They named her Fern. Fern in the few months after her birth needed many xrays to determine that her skull was growing at the same rate as her brain because there was some concern about why she did not have a soft spot and if that would be problematic as she grew. She will be 11 this week and she is perfectly healthy and smart as a whip. She even still asks to this day, if its true that she was born with no soft spot!

There are 2 "soft spots" on a newborns head. A larger one towards the front and one towards the back. Some newborns are born with them fused. This can cause major problems because it doesn't allow for brain growth.

Yes, because to fit through the birth canal, the fetus's head must be able to contort slightly to avoid causing permanent damage to both mother and baby. The only bones which are completely hardened at birth are the heel bones; everything else is pliable. Babies born with no soft spot are very rare.

YES ALL NEWBORNS HAVE SOFT SPOTS AND IF YOU LOOK CAREFULLY YOU CAN SEE THEM BREATH. THAT SPOT SHOULD BE PROTECTED AT ALL TIME. YOU CAN HURT OR KILL A NEWBORN BY HITTING THE NEWBORN THERE. IF I'M NOT MISTAKING IT CAN TAKE UP TO FOUR YEARS FOR THAT AREA TO CLOSE UP, BECAUSE IN TIME IT WILL CLOSE.

Yes they do. Boys shouldn't get their first hair cut until the soft spot has closed in. My son soft spot closed in a 11 months. That's when I cut his hair.

Soft spots??? As in more than just the one on their head??

If you are talking about the one on their head, yes, all babies have it. It is where their skull bones haven't completely fused together. I believe it is called the anterior fontanel.
