Go to Start/Run and enter msconfig. There will be a startup tab that lets you uncheck the stuff you don't want. You can uncheck everything and XP will still run, and go back and recheck things if something stops working right.
There's also the Start/All Programs/startup thing you can delete stuff from.

Go to Start > Run and then type "msconfig" and press OK. Go to startup items and uncheck the qttask item. This will work until you install an update for quicktime - and at that time you'll have to repeat this process.
