I wouldn't say that nerds are particullarly the thing nowadays but they are becoming less and less recognizable as the years go by. Nerds are not the stereotypical horned-rimmed glasses with their weird style of clothing. They are more blending in with the other social 'classes'.
For example, many members off our 11-0 Varsity Football team play video games such as old school gameboy, Xbox, PS2 and the upcoming PS3 and such. They get awesome grades and are apart of many atheletic clubs. I myself am a nerd and part of many physical sports, such as wrestling, football, track, and weightlifting.
I'm not saying that the nerd class has vanished. Every now and then you see the videogame obsessing, Yu-gi-oh card collectin guy walking around. They are usually looked down upon and avoided except for other fellow nerds.
The song "White N' Nerdy" by Weird Al shows us the steriotypical Nerd. In my opinion, he showed us the ultimate nerd and nobody really comes close to that in real life.

Personality traits are not clothing. They don't go in or out of style. You are who you are.
Once you get out of grade school, you realize that you don't classify people as "nerdy", "popular" or "bully".We classify them based on their behavior and actions. So if someone who helps you with a project at work that involves a lot of math, they would be called "helpful" (instead of nerdy). If someone who has a lot of co-workers and friends around their life, they would be called, "friendly" (as oppose to popular). And if someone is harassing you at work, they would be called "fired".
