I have a 95 Toyota Corolla and recently changed the water pump and timing belt. Now, 2 months later it's making funny noises. It's happening more often and I don't know what it is or if it's related to the new upgrades. The noise sounds like soft firecrackers (rumbling) and seems to come from the passenger side dash board. I makes this noise when the car is on and not moving and also when I'm driving it around town. When I drove it on the freeway it didn't make that noise. I opened the hood to check to see where the noise was coming from but I couldn't hear it even though the car was running and my roomate who was sitting inside on the driver side heard it.
Thanks in advance for answering this question!

It's possible that the belt wasn't tightened properly and is loose. The belt maybe slapping on the timing cover. When your going fast on the freeway the engine might be rotating so fast it takes the slack out, which is why you don' hear it on the freeway

i own a repair shop, and its possible that the belt tension-er might have slipped loose on it,and it will make a slight noise once in a while, you might need to re-check some of the things you did to it just to be sure that nothing has slipped loose or you don't have any bolts coming loose on it,if you don't find it ,you might want to have a mechanic look it over and see what he says about it,,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Could be a faulty bearing on the transmission side, or could be a loose bolt which is touching a moving part, like the timing wheel.
