I've had them all, and for me, cats and kittens rule if you're talking about inside animals. For one thing, a kitten is a HECK of a lot less frustrating than a puppy. (You wanna experience real frustration, get two puppies at the same time. Even better, make them high-energy littermates that have already bonded to each other and really don't give a rat's behind about you and your rules. I thought I was gonna kill myself! It's practically IMPOSSIBLE to train two puppies at the same time, I learned.)
Cats and even kittens are relatively easy. Puppies and, to a lesser extent, dogs are harder, b/c they require much more daily training, discipline, attention, and time-consuming care (walks and so forth). They're all great, tho.

For me, a cat. I'm away from the house too often for a fully-grown dog who needs walking, outside time, and regular companionship. Puppies and kittens need regular attention to train them and keep them from destroying the house. Most cats are fine with being left alone most of the day and they use a litterbox more easily than dogs. I would love a dog and I have done rescue work with feral kittens, but a fully-grown and shelter-rescued cat is my best bet :)

I have had a cat for nine years and he has brought me nothing but pleasure. I first got him when I was 4 1/2 and we've been through so much. When I was nine I brought him to a local pet show in the "house hold pet" category and he won two 1st place ribbons along with "best household pet award". At one point he had also run away, but thankfully came back 36 hours later. I was never doughtful of his return. He has also had a near-death experience when he had a urinary track infection and it was my promting to look the symptoms up on the internet that saved him.
He has also witnissed 6 other pets join our family -- 2 gerbils, 2 guinea pigs, and 2 rabbits (which he has lots of fun with).

The first set are just older versions of the second set: I hate it when people purchase animals because they're cute and cuddly as kittens and pups, but then as the animal matures, they suddenly don't want any part of them. Cruelty at it's finest. I take in strays and abused animals all the time, so I really don't have much of a preference anymore, as long as I know that they are now being loved and taken care of.

It depends where you live and how much time you have to spend on an animal. All small animals need a lot of time spent on them. I have dogs but it depends whether you have the time or inclination to walk them daily, whatever the weather. If you don't have the time or much space you might be better with a cat as they're a bit more independent.

Kitten because they're smarter than dogs....but then I would have to go with a dog because once a cat runs away from home..they never come back and they become strays...so I guess I would have to go with a puppy!

Well a puppy's going to turn into a dog and so as a kitten.
Probably a trained dog. But I prefer to train her as a puppy at start =)
