The best way I can explain human interaction in general is that we "use" each other. Whether our intention is good or bad, we are constantly using other people to meet our own personal desires and needs.
It is interesting to note that people are much less likely to participate in anything if they are suspicious of "being used". We are constantly being used, though, and often happiest when we feel useful.
Exerting influence is a way of using other people to boost our self-confidence and self-image. This would seem to be an activity governed by desire, however many folks quickly gravitate to making themselves "believe" that it is a necessity, almost like an addiction.
Many people put alot of time and effort in gaining attention.

Thats a Good Question !
I would like to think that people are trying to help in some way,
also depends on how old the person is that is being influenced,
and who is doing the influencing,
Most parents do it out of lov for there children , not wanting there children to make the same mistakes as they might have made and influencing them to look at a situation differently. in order for them to make there own decicion. like trying to build someones confidence.
As with friends, and other people thats really our choice , we either choose to be influenced or not,
If we do not choose to be influenced then we say so, in a nice way , like.." i understand your trying to help, but i choose to make my own decicion.".or just a simple.. no thanks
" We choose our own path by the decisions we make "
Everyone looks at things in a different way we all make our own choices
Some people like to dominate others as it makes them feel good, " feeding there own ego;s,"
Why do people exert influence on others? because we allow them too.
