Everywhere you go, there is a cup labeled "Tips". What's the tip for? For just turning around and saying "Next please" ?

I ignore tip jars at take-out counters. These people get paid a higher base wage than table service and they do less for me. I find it ridiculous for them to expect tips. (A friend of mine was treated so rudely at a take-out counter he reached into the tip jar and took a couple bucks out!)

However, I do tip when I receive table service. The people who serve me there make less than half of minimum wage, and my tip is based on their performance. I start at 15%, 20% for fine dining, and go up and down from there. If the service is totally crappy I get a manager and let it be known how bad a time I had. Often this will result in my not paying for my meal at all, and many restaurants make the server pay in these cases.

Great question. It does seem that tips are expected just to be given for fair or mediocre service. And I do. I usually leave twenty percent just for getting service. But that's OK. The servers have a living to make and I don't mind that. That said, if they are rude or have attitude, I will not only not leave a tip, I will call them out. Get their boss involved, raise hell and do my best to get them fired. I ain't paying to get no crap.

I don't tip.
I'm against tipping.

As a customer, I should receive good service and not have to pay additional money for good service.

I understand some businesses pay their employees a lower wage with the understanding tips are expected to bring the employee up to minimum wage (restaurant workers for example).
I would like to see an elimination of this practice and the law that allows this practice.

Think about this, the places you go are your own investments so tipping is good, to share is good. Though in the
same venue, do not tip out of participation in a bad habit.
