That all depends on the person. Some learn really quick, others it takes years!
It took me a long time to master this, but once I did, I flew through gymnastics and became a champion.
I can give you some tips on doing a back handspring!
Practice on an incline mat. When you feel you are falling, its time to jump and jump hard! Keep your arms straight and strong and push off. Keep arms by your head at all times!
Arch a Little, but if you over arch it is a BIG mess.
Bend your knees slightly, arch a little bit, and push you shoulders open as much as you can. Then using your stomach, back, and arm muscles, snap your body back to a hollow position, pushing off your hands, and land on your feet on the floor in front of the board/mat.
Put it all together you should be able to do a back handspring.
Oh, and, good luck and have fun in gymnastics!

it depends how devoted you are to the sport and how flexible you are. It took me about a year to do a back handspring by myself on the floor. However, I learned how to do one on the trampoline almost immediatley because i loved gymnastics and was pretty flexible. I also was good at doing them with a spotter and doing them on an incline, which makes it easier. But regardless of how long it takes, stick with gymnastics..it's a great sport :)

i depends on your ability, how good the coach is and how well you want to do it. you shouldn't worry too much about rushing to learn things as it is far more prudent to be able to do them well.
