In my opinion the Crusades started as a result of hate and intolerance. The crusaders hated the idea of the Holy Land being in the possession of the Muslims. These crusaders claimed to be acting in the Name of God and/or Jesus Christ. But just making the claim doesn't make it so. These characters decided they were justified in killing all Muslims -and Jews sometimes, too- in order to purge from the Holy Land anything that they perceived as non-Christian and/or unholy. Just my opinion
