You will have to get a router. Are you on dial-up or DSL or what?
I have Dsl and the phone co. had to walk me through the DOS part to tell the computers to use the same phone line.

If by "telephone cable" you mean a cable with at least 2 pairs that are twisted (my hopes are it would be a CAT3 cable), you can try your luck and make yourself an Ethernet crossover cable (see the pin layout in the resources below). You will then plug this cable's ends into LAN ports of your two PCs.

The only thing is though: you will need to buy 8P8C plugs as well as crimper tools and that would cost you several times the cost of a ready-made crossover cable. But if you prefer the DIY route ...

Anyways, you will then have to set your PCs on static IP addresses from the same subnet (like, 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2) and netmask 255.255.255.0 (TCP/IP properties for the LAN connection)

Alternatively, if this telephone cable is actually a LIVE telephone cable, you can use a pair of HomePNA adapters to run your Ethernet link over the live telephone pair. The phone pair has to run in parallel to both PC locations

Good luck!

George has the best simple solution. There are several other way to do what you want.
1) Do as George advised and connect via Cat5 ethernet. and add a dial-up router and one or two external dial-up modems.* Check eBay.
2) Use a USB data cable** to connect the computers and use the Network Connection Wizard to access the dial-up from one computer to the other. Down side is both computers have to be on.
NEVER USE A REGULAR CABLE TO CONNECT USB PORTS!!!!
This WILL burn out your USB ports.
3) Use a serial Null Cable to connect the two computers via RS-232 serial ports.*** This is the least advised but is an option.

phone cables wont work both your computers need an Ethernet card installed and then get some c5 cable and hook them up that way. then reconfigure your network options. a router would be easier as then if you have high speed internet service then both computers could use that too at the same time.
