In Gattaca, what is the setting of the movie. what is a good clip from the movie to show?

I really don't know anything about this movie but what are some key things i can mention about it?

When the conversation comes up...refer to the scene when Halle Berry runs off the road and asks the young girl if she's OK. When the dead girl grabs Halle's head, it is to die for. Of course there is the scene when Halle chops-up her husband. For good reason, I might add. Penelope Cruz' scenes in prison were very tense. May need to view twice to grab it all, I did.

For starters, ignore what Joe Schmoe (previous poster) said, he was thinking of the movie "Gothika", which is totally different.

Gattaca takes place in "the not too distant future" and is about using genetics to remove defects (baldness, nearsightedness, heart problems, etc.) from unborn babies. So essentially everyone born past a certain date is perfect, with the exception of "faith births" which, for one reason or another, are not genetically tinkered with.

The basic theme of the movie is the quote found on the DVD/casette case which is "There is no gene for the human spirit". Esentially it's about the triumph of will over shortcomings. A good scene that captures the spirit of the movie is the swimming contest between the two brothers, Vincent and Anton.

I hope this gives you enough info to fake your way through your panel discussion or class report or whatever it is that you are trying to avoid watching the movie for, but if you have the time you should watch it, it's good.
