You can receive emergency certification in many school districts throughout the states. You might have better luck in rural or inner city school districts. I know people who taught in Florida without teaching certificates. You should be in a program b/c you will have better luck getting a job. Typically you have to earn 9 credits a year to maintain emergency certification. A lot of school districts are shying away from the emergency certification due to no child left behind. They are being held accountable to hire more highly qualified teachers. You might have better luck applying to private schools but the pay is typically lower.

In Washington state where I live, you can start out teaching with a bachelors in education, and you have to earn a masters degree within several years. You can use some of your salary to finance your graduate education.
If your bachelors is in an area other than education, you still may be able to get an emergency certification to teach while you take additional education classes in your free time. The emergency certification is available only for subjects or locales where there is a severe shortage of teachers. For example, maybe physics teachers are desperately needed in a certain school, or maybe teachers of all kinds are needed in rural or urban areas.

A lot depends on what the BA is in....public schools generally require certification, but many private schools do not require certification, and some will pay for you to take the education courses. You might also check on "emergency" certification procedures in states....they let you teach while getting the certification.

If your B.A. is in education, you can typically find a job in any state. Otherwise, you have to take the courses. Teaching at a public school without a teaching degree or certificate is illegal.

What subject is your BA? If it is in Math or one of the Sciences, you can teach in any urban area (i.e. Philadelphia, New York, Miami, LA, Chicago) right away. Check out http://www.philadelphiateachingfellows.org
There are other programs like it across the country.

You can substitute teach, but you need to take courses in education and take tests in your subject area(s) to become a certified teacher.
