Is it true that cats hate oranges and ants hate cloves?

I read somewhere that you can keep cats at bay with orange zest/peels and ants with cloves. Is this true? Please answer *ONLY IF* you have had experience with this...

I know for a fact that cats hate moth balls. I don't know about the rest of the stuff.
