Actually, the small amount of water initially added will immediately boil. This localized, violent reaction will cause the water (and nearby acid) to project upward, possibly into your face. ALWAYS add acid to water.

The question really gets to why one should not pour water into concentrated sulfuric acid, H2SO4. Mixing the two is so exothermic that it could boil the water and squirt out the acid. "So do like you're oughter, pour acid into water."

once a girl asked our teacher the same question and he answered because you can't get married.
but seriously, the acid is heavier than water so it will stay down. the reaction between water and acid produces so much heat that it'll make the water boil, so it'll splash in your face (can you see my teacher's point?) you must ALWAYS add acid to water, in small parts, slowly and with stirring, and be careful that the temperature to it doesn't go to high. if it is high, wait until it cools down.

Because of the reaction which can splash up and harm you, it's worse when you add a base to an acid.
