A valve that has dropped into the combustion chamber. This is an expensive repair. Sometimes it is due to a fairly recent head rebuild that was not done correctly. The head has to come off to fix it. It is also likely that other things have to be fixed at the same time if you intend on keeping and driving the car. Because of this, the cheapest fix may be to replace the whole engine if the rest of the car is OK.

The retainer at the top of the valve comes off and the valve falls into the cylinder.
