Heres some background to the question: Yesterday (Friday) my brother opened the spa. It hasnt been used for years. So, he opened the spa and starts crying. I ask him what is wrong... oh by the way hes only 10... and he says, "SNAKE!" I then remember he is terrified of snakes. I walk over to the spa, and there in the water with a bunch of frogs is... a coiled snake. I started freaking out. How is there a snake in my spa. My grandma says it is probably using the pipes to get around. I go to sleep that night really freaked out. Right now, I go and open the spa. Curious little me... I look around when I see a jet hole. And there in the hole... IS THE SNAKES HEAD! My grandma is right, he is using the pipes. I called my mom and she says it is a watersnake somehow. She said to go online and see if watersnakes live in California. If they dont, HOW IN THE WORLD DID ONE GET IN MY SPA???

Sounds like you found a little garter snake --it came looking for food.
They are *harmless!*----this is California, unless it has rattles it's cool..
Some Garter snakes eat mostly fish and--*frogs*--they spend a lot of time in the water. ( there are a couple of kinds, some live on land )
nervous critters, when you pick them up they may try and bite----most likely Will take a dump on you---Which is Smelly-

**( while they have tiny teeth, like pins-which might draw blood, they have NO poison)

It could have been brought by an individual that comes from a state where they do have water snakes. I may have escaped and somehow ended up in your spa. Unless its fake and someone is playing a practical joke on you guys.

The link below will show you pics of snakes native to California. Maybe you'll see a familiar face. You can also Google the description of the snake instead of naming it specifically.

I also answered your other Question here is a great site that you can find the snake at. There are hundreds of different snakes in California and I won't be able to directly say what kind it is without a better description but you can ask me at my email Cavaclan4@aol.com for a better answer and just give me a better description and i will do all the work.

It's probaly a banded water snake, a green water snake, or a diamondback watersnake. Don't kill it. Its ashame someone would even suggest that because their bueatifull creatures that belong in the wild and deserve to live. Snakes can get in the tightest spaces you can imagine. My corn snakes have got out several times. Have someone relocate the snake by a lake so it can burrow for the winter. Then again please don't kill it! Ihope this helps!!! Nick

there are a lot of snakes that like the water. This doesn't mean that they are water snakes. Most water snakes have specific characteristics. A lot look more like eels than snakes. I suggest trying to figure out what type of snake is really is. It could just be your run of the mill garden snake.

Well, I know they have Rattlesnakes, King Snakes and Bull snakes. I know rattle snakes only cross water if they have to. But i don't know about the rest.
